<image:title>Work - Crew Lock Bag</image:title>
<image:caption>This bag was completed during my soft goods internship at Johnson Space Center. It is is a modified replica of a Crew Lock Bag (CLB), a container that astronauts use to carry tools during Extravehicular Activity (EVA), or “space walks.” I interpreted technical drawings of the original CLB design and modified the pattern to shorten the construction time. This bag was constructed to be a part of a spacesuit display for the US embassy in Moscow, Russia. It contains replica tools that are suspended to imitate microgravity, and it is attached to the suit using two tethers. I worked with another intern, Jason Chang (RISD 2020) to fabricate the bag, suspension wires, and tether covers, copying existing spaceflight hardware to ensure that the display looked as accurate as possible. The exterior bag is made of Nomex, a fire-retardant aramid fiber, with panel stiffeners made of woven glass. We constructed 3 separate bags before arriving at the final CLB, using our first two attempts to practice construction techniques and modify the pattern. This project took 4 weeks to complete, and the entire spacesuit will be on display in Moscow soon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Other features include 3 flat-folding handles, 2 teflon label pockets, 2 3D-printed grips for robot interfacing, and velcro pads to secure the bag in place while folded flat. These features were based on recommendations from astronauts and spaceflight soft-goods designers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Cargo Transfer Bag</image:title>
<image:caption>This project was completed at my soft goods internship at Johnson Space Center. I was challenged to develop a concept for a lightweight, flat-packing stowage bag for deep space exploration, specifically the lunar Gateway mission to establish a human presence on the moon. The design for this bag comes out of frustrations with the current CTB design–a 4lb bag with padding, no visibility of the contents, and no way to realistically interface with a robot.</image:caption>

<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5d7a73b04056651887472632/1569212534331-12DJBRLMR5N3380XSQWT/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>Work</image:title>
<image:caption>The final prototype weighs 2.5 lbs and packs flat similar to a paper bag. It is made of 2 layers of Nomex, a flame-retardant aramid fiber, with woven glass fabric inserts for stiffness, which are cored out to reduce weight. 4 of the bag’s sides have clear teflon windows– a feature that both reduces weight and allows flight crew members to directly see the contents of the bag.</image:caption>

<image:caption>RISD Rover is a student team at the Rhode Island School of Design that competes in NASA’s annual Human Exploration Rover Challenge. The team spends 9 months designing, prototyping, analyzing, and fabricating a human powered vehicle that must traverse a Mars-like obstacle course. The 2 riders must perform tasks such as sample collection and instrument deployment on the course as well. The race takes place at the Marshall Space Flight Center every Spring.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Crew Cabin Concept</image:title>
<image:caption>This 3D model is a fictional concept for a deep space sleeping station. Sci-fi designs often neglect the constraints of modern space travel, while current spaceflight design leaves little room for creature comforts. I wanted to strike the balance between these two realms of design by creating a homey, livable, yet believable concept for a spaceship bedroom that would be inhabited on a long duration mission. Considerations included privacy, airflow, habitable volume, stowage, aesthetics, lighting, customizability, and interfaces that would be ideal for zero gravity. The lights in these renderings are shown in both the “daytime” and “evening” modes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the spring of 2019, I worked on a redesign of the branding for RISD’s Industrial Design department. I developed the form language, graphic elements, logo, and color scheme alongside my classmate Sam DiVirgilio (RISD 2020). Our work culminated in a comprehensive style guide and a guide book that was developed by the rest of the class intended to be distributed to incoming students. In 2022, the Industrial Design Department officially adopted this branding work. This project was completed as a part of ArTwerking, an advanced studio taught by professor Jess Brown. The complete style guide is shown below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This jacket is a physical artifact of the year 2040, in a possible future that is plagued with mass corporate surveillance and an arms race between algorithms and guerilla defense tactics. The Infobomber empowers the individual as an agent of cognitive warfare. Many of the tactics used in 2040 are internet-based, but they require a combination of digital and physical media to be wielded effectively. This jacket is a type of “modern armor,” just one tool of young protesters fighting against injustices committed by governments and corporations.</image:caption>

Changing our relationship with surveillance technology may be the only way to accomplish this. Designated patterning to signal consent to tracking may help.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - I’m Lily!</image:title>
<image:caption>I am an industrial designer with a passion for space exploration. I love working in diverse teams and learning new things every day, both in my work and in my personal life. I’m excited about the possibilities for human spaceflight, and how it can benefit the earth in return. I am a proud alumna of the Rhode Island School of Design, with a BFA in Industrial Design and a concentration in Computation, Technology, and Culture. I previously worked as an Industrial Designer at the Center for Design & Space Architecture at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and am now a Design Concept Engineer with Blue Origin.</image:caption>
